Best option for exporting spreadsheets from rails

I have a new feature going onto my website that will need a facility to download a spreadsheet version. There was a video that suggested making CSV or HTML table. CSV is nice, except that I'd like to export the totals as formulae. HTML Tables seemed nice in the video, but raised some warnings from Excel (that did not appear in the video) that might scare users. What are the current, common choices?
