Make a noise, try to record it and check if the recorded wave is not flat

What kind of noise would suffice? Like a badger? Or perhaps a squeal?

I had actually thought in the noise of silence ;P

"Testing 123"?

There is no real way to do this.

About the best you're going to get is determining if a mic is connected. That's IF the driver supports reporting that kind of state.

There is no way to determine if it's working.
