TFS2012 Express "can't connect to remote server"

I installed TFS 2012 Express on my machine (fresh install, not an upgrade from prior version), and when I try to connect to the team server, I get the following:

"TF400324: Team Foundation services are not available from server mars. Unable to connect to remote server."

I don't want/need build services - I'm only using TFS for version control. What do I have to do?
