Where to put the firewall?

If I want to put a firewall to filter out messages containing certain words or phrases, then would I need to put that at the domain gateway or at the domain mail server?
I am still confused at the diffrence. Please clarify.

I'll say you're confused. A firewall is not used to filter messages based on content.

What you are describing is an email, or spam, filter

Solution 2

This is the question from a computer science text book directly. Suppose you want to establish a firewall to filter out email messages containing a certian phrase or term. Would this firewall be placed at your domain's gatewat or at the domain's mail server. Please explain your answer.
