Data not being saved on user profile in Joomla

I have created a new user profile plugin with custom fields everything is displaying correctly but when I click to edit profile and enter the data it doesn't get saved. I'm not getting any error it says Profile successfully saved but when I view the profile the fields are empty. I also disabled my plugin and enabled joomlas default user - profile plugin to test if it was working and its seen I'm having the same issue with that too. I'm using Joomla 3.1.1, is this a bug in Joomla? Can someone give me some insight?
