What is the difference between an article and a reference to the article? Note that "what is the difference" questions usually don't make sense. What's the difference between apple and Apple?

In a past i was thinking that "Apple is always apple"..., but now i'm not sure ;)
In this case first (Apple) is used to communicate and play, second (apple) is used to eat ;) Do i understand it well (rhetorical question)?
