canny edge detection algorithm for finding distance to an obstacle

hi I am trying to make a navigation app in android for blind people. I tried computing distance by calculating angle of phone camera to obstacle and height of phone. But it didn't work

I read about canny edge detection algorithm, honestly i didn't quite understand it much.
I found that code in android and it is running successfully, So my question is how will it determine distance to an obstacle, so that a person can be alarmed before it collide.
