making a camera trap - CodeProject

I am working on a project - Camera trap. I need to take pics from camera when i find humans/ animals passing, compress it (i mean the pic); many such cameras send it through xbee later to main memory. i am a beginner to this field, never had practical experience, please help me out with h/w and s/w.

"when i find humans/animals passing, compress it" -- I hope you want to compress the images, not the humans, or animals :-)

There are lots of articles around which explain how to capture images. Google will find them for you.
