I have Visual Studio 2012 Express (Desktop and Web). I previously had Visual Studio 2010 version of the same which I have uninstalled. But I still see the following entry in the control panel:

Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1.

Attempt to remove it elicits a warning like system would be rendered in a state where SP1 can not be re-applied and/or the projects can not be opened. Is it a bug or a superfluous warning which can be ignored?

Ignore the warning and go ahead. If you want to uninstall the Visual Studio version, you won't need it's service pack.

However, why not using too versions of Visual Studio on the same system? It is always possible.
