how to give permission to AMI manually

hi,
i need help in giving permission to Amazon AMI.
i gave permission to one of my friend account id ... But he is not able to see that ami in his private AMI list in aws console. i also gave my ami as public ami , but still cannot see it in other account id ......will it take time to show up? can you please help me?
