Most barcode scanners emulate keyboards, and you can't tell if any specific character was entered by a scanner or by a "real" keyboard - Windows doesn't have any mechanism for providing the source as it doesn't tag that kind of info anywhere. You can't tell a scanner to "move to the next line" - all you can do is tell it to provide specific lead in / trail out sequences which your software can interpret as either a "new line" or "end of barcode" marker.
Your software then looks for that and takes the appropriate action.

I have dealt with ones that can append a new line or tab after their barcode. I found we used the tab option almost constantly since that is the standard key to navigate between fields. In the end we made no alterations to any software to deal with the barcode scanner. It was one that plugged inline with the keyboard and it just worked.
