I am a hobbyist programmer and I'm not afraid of research. I was please wondering if someone would be able to point me in the right direction. I am grateful and appreciative for any information you might be able to provide.

I work at a library and there are proprietary programs that do something like this, but they cost so much of the taxpayers' dollars that it is almost pointless to offer the service.

This is what I'd like to do in the most basic sense:

Wireless client computers add an open printer from my network. Any print jobs they send are held by the print server. Either the user or the print job gets a generated code after the print job is accepted.

The user enters the generated code that they received into a terminal that is connected to the printer. When they enter the code, the print job is released.

What I have tried:

I tried to use CUPs to hold print jobs, but it isn't working correctly for me which is why I'd please benefit from some guidance from a veteran programmer that could point me toward the information I would need to get started researching.
