Java web service connect to magento open source database

hi guys !
i am trying to create an java webservice with netbean ide 7.0 that can connect to mysql database (magento database) .
- I can connect to mysql database to insert,select or remove any tables .
- But with magento database i don't know how to connect and get data (example: categories,products,...). i think i need use magento api ! right it ?

some body help me to resolve ?
