Good tools for Data Mining

Hello And Good Wishes
I am doing M.Tech from India. So for thesis or disseration purpose I want to know that which tools is good for Data Mining.
Some body say that
1. ) MATLAB
2.) JAVA
3. any Open Source

Please tell me , because I am little bit confuse.

This is also very helpful for new reserch person.

It depends on the type of data, how it's being collected and how it's being used. The question as asked is too vague to give any kind of useful answer.

Matlab is good at math, Java is good at cross platform development (depending on how it's used) and "Open Source Projects" are . . . well, they're too varied to give a general explanation of what they are. If that's what someone recommended then ask them what they meant, or do some research yourself to find out the strengths and weaknesses of those technologies and how they can be used to your advantage.
