Ubuntu[^] is designed to be the "Linux for everyone" so it's not a bad place to start. They have lots of documentation[^] that can help you, even going so far as to explain how mice work.

In addition to Linux distro like Ubuntu or Fedora; you will need following books -
1. Advanced linux programming[^] - For application programming in linux

2. Linux device driver[^] - For writing device drivers in linux
