writing from characters to binary

what means when we have some data witch parameter type is characters ( Characters[6] fo instance) and it says that the encoding is : 7-bits ASCII with counterpart with character NUL ????
i need to write this data in binary file on line with 5 bytes of size.

i mean 6 bytes of size not 5 in the binary file
