Hello Experts

This is not a programming question but a Windows OS related issue I am facing.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate Edition installed on my machine with a CD-DVD RW drive from LG Electronics. I am using this hardware since 3 years with minor upgrades to other parts of the system.

Recently I started getting this error whenever I insert a data DVD or video DVD or a installable - bootable DVD in the DVD ROM ( screen A). The second option in the dialog is disabled and if I click next , then it shows (screen) B.
Please have a look at the error screen here error screen shot[^]

What I tried
1. Installed the Microsoft fixit from here http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/en-us[^]

2. Uninstalled the DVD ROM drivers and reinstalled.

3. Updated the DVD ROM drivers online.

4. Removed the DVD ROM from the machine and plugged it again.

5. Searched online forums and everywhere on the internet and found that Windows 7 is using my DVD ROM as a Live File System. But I don't want Windows 7 to do that. Its my system and Win7 has no rights to make my DVD ROM work according to his will. Please guide me how I can use the DVD ROM normally and not as a Live File System.

I agree with Kenneth. Virus check, or possibly your drive itself is dying a slow and painful death.

Perhaps its due to smoking :-D

1 solution

If your drive behave erratically after a few yeart, the drive itself might be defective. One of the best way to know is to try that drive in another computer and/or try another computer drive in your computer.

It might even be the motherboard that is defective. On a laptop computer we have to buy an external drive as the internal one was not working Inside that laptop neither a drive from another computer... but both drive were working find in the other computer. Finally a external drive has fix the problem in our case.

Have you try different CDs and DVDs like professionnal music CD or DVD and one that you have burned yourself. The most thing you try, the more you will be able to identify the problem.

When the hardware is broken, a software fix will usually not works.

Thanks Philipe for the answer...

I tried with different DVDs on the same system. I am getting the same error. I am not even able to browse the DVD by other ways like 'windows explorer' or 'Open in a new window '..

I burnt a Windows 8 ISO to a DVD using Nero . It burnt successfully without any error. On reading it gives the same error message when exploring the DVD in the DVD ROM
