Front page policy for updated articles?

What is the policy for an updated article to appear on the main page?

I can't seem to find a consistency in it.

One time I did updates - article would always appear on the front page, another - it does not.

As far as I know all the approved updates appear on the list. However, before the article is shown it's pending for approval. Sometimes this is quicker and sometimes it's slower so perhaps this may cause some confusion.

That is definitely not the case. For example, my last update for article "Basic HTTP Handler" was approved approximately 12 hours ago, but it didn't appear on the front page, same happened with its update before that. On previous updates, however, it did appear on the front page after approval.

Hence the question...
