A USB scanner doesn't really require anything from code. Most USB scanners simply emulate a keyboard. So if you have a TextBox that has focus, when the scanner scans a barcode, it will put the scanned data into the barcode just as if it was typed.

Is this true..

Generally, yes - but they can normally be programmed to provide a leadin and tailout character to separate the data from the other characters. That is manufacturer dependant, though.
