Why android application has no close button?

Hi,
Why an android application has no close button? How I ensure that an android app in sleep state (ie pressing home/menu button) does't utililizing any resource? What happenes to a working thread (java.lang.Runnabale) while the application goes to minimize state? If a particular thread is still alive in minimize state, then how I believe an app download freely from android market which is minimized will not utilizing any resource or stealing any infromation from my phone?
