CListCtrl selection customization

Hi I am designing a CListCtrl widget that must do the following
1. Color the rows to one of two colors depending upon certain application data
2. When the user selects a row the color toggle - without the selected row being highlighted. IE the user should just see the row change color.

I have managed most of this but cannot get the selection part working

Can anyone please give me some hints
