Is wordpress the best option?

Hi guys,
I am taking in a project. But I am bit confused one of my friends said wordpress is good for developing a website. while another one said its good for blogging and for CMS style. My real question is that is it really good for doing a social network project. Should i choose some other programming language like ASP.NET, PHP etc

Wordpress got pwned this week. Someone gained root access. At this point, I'd say WordPress is a no-go until they get their collective sh*t together.

I guess you mistake CMS for framework. Wordpress,Joomla, Drupal and similars are ready-to-go CMS. They can be enhanced and customized with plugins.
For develop your own things you can use a so called frame work like Zend.
You might have a look at Comparison_of_web_application_frameworks#PHP[^]

The programming language to use primarily depends on your skills ;)
