Is domain registration and webhosting are two different things

I have come to know that web hosting and domain registration are two different things. Means if I have to host my site to some hosting site, I also have to register my domain from some domain registration site (like godaddy.com)

Can some one have some explanation about this problem.

Thanks for answering. I actually mean that If I host my site, will the hosting company register my domain itself, or I'll have to register it myself?
