I am very new working with audio/video formats. I need to create an app in windows 7 that listens to a audio through the microphone and saves it in the wave format. When I looked up google, I found Windows Core Audio APIs, DirectSound, WaveForm functions and so on. What would be the best approach if I want to do this without any third party APIs.
Thanks in advance.

well, you have to use some sort of API, no getting around that when it comes to system hardware... its a matter of what's a better choice, what's you application for (school project, work project for audio tagging, etc...)?
