1. make sure atleast 25% of your C drive is free. Use Drive cleanup utility
2. Increase memory if possible
3. Check your antivirus s/w. Some software are notorious for slowing down.
4. Clear up Temp folder. Usually it is Windows\Temp
5. Remove unwanted s/w

You could have put the same thing as a solution to the problem Rajesh....

Thanks Pravin

Hi ketan,

- You this excellent software CCleaner[^] to remove junks from your computer. It also removes unwanted registries.
- Use this software Auslogics[^] for defragmentation of Drives
- Run Anti-virus thoroughly to check for worms and do run specific softwares for Spywares[^] and malwares[^] as sometimes anti-virus may not detect them
- Uninstall unwanted softwares.
- Or formatting your lappy can also be considered after doing the backup of your system.

I added Autoruns (see my Answer), it really belongs in your list, too, isn't it?

Reinstall Windows. That's the best way.

Agree, it can be. Computer can be full of crapware, very typically, my 5,

Suggestion 1) Buy a better laptop.(Expensive and not practical).
Suggestion 2) Delete the the "naughty" content you may have encountered accidentally while browsing. (Won't get it all and won't speed up the machine)
Suggestion 3) You could run all the app options like what Tarun suggests, but these apps have the potential of screwing up your system worse. They sometimes work ok, but ultimately they have side effects.
Suggestion 4) Reinstall the system from scratch to get a clean system base again. Don't forget to make a system image that makes restoring it easier in the future. (Takes the longest, but is worth it. See John's answer.)

About (3) you are right in principle, but I know some of the products: they won't create problems. Best advice is to re-install all, and this should be first and foremost. You get my 5, too.

I agree there are probably some that won't wreck havok on the system, but how many bad ones will get tried first. :) (I learned by experience on this one.)
Sergey Alexandrovich Kryukov 10-Mar-11 13:11pm
I know, but you can get same havok using just Windows. Some 3rd-party stuff is a must; and they saved me from Windows havoc. But of course if you use it by the ads you will screw up.
CCleaner and Sysinternals are safe and must-have...

My 5 - he could always switch to Ubuntu, would certainly extend the expected lifetime of his laptop. But I'd still prefer your first option :)
Empty Startup menu.
Delete all programs and files you no longer use.
Do a disk clean for all old cookies/deleted items etc.
Delete anything that runs in background that you don't need.
Defrag disk.

If that doesn't work, format c: and reinstall windows.

My two cents: download Sysinternals Suite http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb842062[^] and run Autouns, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902[^].

You will be surprised how many stuff is auto-loaded but you don't need it.

But first and foremost is re-installation of OS. My point here is: even when you do it, you still will get a lot of unwanted stuff :-)).

in order to improve boot time performance you have stop applications and services from loading automatically on start up:

to do this go run->type -> msconfig -> Startup items -> uncheck unwanted software(you can still start them up manually)

to the same thing for services but be careful you don't want to un-check certain services as this cna causes system instability

this method can improve your system performance by 80% if this doesn't work try anti-virus and anti-spyware software.

if all else fails format.

K.D
