Are there any Report Writing User Groups, groups that focus on custom reporting in general and not for a specific report writing software/platform? As best as I can tell the only custom report writing entities seem to be tied to a specific product or platform such as Microsoft's SSRS or SASS's Business Objects.


With Reporting be the second half of most business software packages it amazes how there appears to be no general purposes custom reporting site/user forum./group. There are custom reporting topics that are not product specific such as report mockups (i.e. what's realistic to expect from clients and what's not, how bets to get a client to mockup the custom report they want and so on).

I'm the DBA/part-time dev at my company and we are currently faced with choosing between 2-3 bad reporting options because the business accounting software we use is invested in its own proprietary reporting solution so instead of choosing what would be best for clients they choose what's best in terms of licensing costs (for them not the customer). I would have thought in this day and age that it would be possible to create a non-proprietary web based reporting tool; perhaps something that uses HTML 5.0 but I've yet to find a non-product specific report writing users group let alone and open source reporting too.

Thoughts? Recommendations (not for a specific reporting tool but where I can find otters who want to talk Custom Report Writing in general).
