How do I choose a graphics system?

I want to use System.Drawing objects or OpenGL or Drawing3D. What is the most modern one? I will use VB.net.

What I have tried:

Studying various web pages ad nauseum.

Great comeback. But my question is "Which is the most modern" and you did not address that, please do if you know the answer.

Well the most modern one may be totally unsuitable for your needs (which we have no idea about), which is why I replied the way I did. And if you really want to know which is the most modern you can probably find out by doing a little research.

An easier question for us to answer might be "What should I have for dinner tonight?". What is your requirement? What do you mean by modern? How can you decide to use VB.net first and then ask this question? Do more research (ie work) and then ask a real question. Richard M's answer is perfectly reasonable and clearly comes from experience. For you to judge it silly says reams about yourself.

My original question was killed (by a moderator I suppose) because it was regarded as spam. It had more details such as a video link to youtube showing what the app does at this point. I now presume I cannot post a video link or the moderator will kill the question.

Anyway, I resubmitted the question to be totally acceptable insofar as the moderator would be concerned, but obviously that was not a good strategy. And I was beaten down for the simplified question, begging the new question why do I pay $49/month to get abused? My bartender already does that for me. But I get beer for my trouble.

Anyway I calmed down a bit now. My requirement is that I will feed geometry from my present app that uses Excel shapes, to a subroutine that redraws the Excel shapes on perhaps a .net canvas object. I would hopefully gain the ability to eventually give the polyshapes some depth and rotate and zoom with DirectX on some canvas, and fill the shapes.

That is what I need, I think I have decided to go with DirectX, but I cannot accept the first answer which indeed was silly "Try them all and decide which one does what you want." So how do I back out the question for consideration without accepting it?

I do welcome your comments about this.

I suggest you read Code Project Quick Answers FAQ[^], and maybe rethink what question you want to ask. It is no good asking things like "what is the best", "what should I use", etc. as those are research questions which you need to look into. People here can only answer specifics, everything else is purely subjective and we don't have all the facts.

So, forget this post (or delete it), and open a new question if necessary with all the facts.

BTW, who the hell are you paying $49 a month to? This site is entirely free and the technical support services are provided by volunteers from around the world.

It is nearly impossible to bring you a meaningful answer, because:
- as Richard told you, we do not have any idea of what you want to do.
- using System.Drawing objects is not a goal per se. It is also unclear whether you want to draw in 2D or 3D.
- the most modern is barely a criterion; that could even mean the most immature.
Please try to describe what you want to draw and you may get some useful answers.
