Operations on excel sheets using apache poi in ecplise

I want to use two existing excel sheets and perform some comparison and accordingly some operations. I already have vba macro codes for the excel which works perfect but I now have to do the entire thing using java in eclipse. Can anyone please help me?

What I have tried:

I have tried adding apache poi jar to the project and I can read one excel file in the form of .xls but I dont know how to proceed after that
