Is it just that one file or does this happen with other XLS files?
Does the file open on other computers?
Is this only on this one computer?

It is just one xls file. I have tried to open it on another computer. The same result.

Not your solution, but should be interesting.
Your file is probably corrupted. I don't know if a tool can repair your file, but I know that there is a common solution to this. The solution is to do backups.

The problem: computers are not 100% fail safe and Excel is not either.
The solution: with today's computers, it is easy and fast to duplicate data. When you get a failure, the backup allow you to recover the data easily with minimum loss.

Doing backups is a waste of time and resources which is done in hope that it remain waste of time and resources. But when you get a failure, this wasted time is suddenly invaluable.

If your .xls file gets corrupted, then here I would like to refer Kernel for Excel recovery software. The software supports recovery of both XLS and XLSX file of MS Excel. In addition, users can also recover multiple MS Excel file data in a single recovery cycle.
