Hello, I'm a beginner at programming writing up a theoretical project for university and i wanted to know if this idea could actually be done in real life.

I'm trying to collaborate the prices of items from different supermarkets so that you can see that e.g. apples are $4/Kg at supermarket 1, $3 at supermarket 2 and $2.50 at supermarket 3 so that people can pick the cheaper option.

I was wondering if the prices and the item could be copied from the online catalogue of these supermarkets e.g. https://www.woolworths.com.au/Shop/SpecialsGroups/half-price

to my website and be updated automatically whenever the supermarket updates their catalogue (which should be every week) without any manual tweaking.

Also, if I hired a programmer for the duration of this project (estimating 3 months), how much would it cost?

What I have tried:

I've looked around for programmers and there are many websites but still not sure which type of programmer is the 'right' option. Need opinions and ideas from experienced programmers whether this project will work and how long it will take

Probably not within the time frame you mention. Unless you have unlimited funds.

1 solution

Has already been done.

A barcode scanner application for the iDevices scans the barcode for a product and then looks up its price in various stores and displays them.

This works for US stores only. However, I scanned the barcode for a German moisturising cream and the software managed to find an online store in the US from which it could be bought.

So, unless you are going to include all those el cheapo Cinese online sites, you could give up this idea.

How about sending me my consulting fee of $10,000 for this advice?
