Why we need managed extensibility framework in any application ?

There are many ways to plug and play with an external application but why we need to go for a Managed Extensibility Framework in visual studio ?

What I have tried:

MVVMlight for mobile and desktop applications,MVVMCross for mobile app,Caliburn with desktop based apps
