Overlay drawing over a running video in directx

im using the DirectX class library.i refered following application to preview and capture the video http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/7637/DirectX-Video-Stream-and-frame-capture

from the digital cameras to the hard disk.. but i can't find a way to draw on() playback video.In DirestX\samples...DxText – A sample application showing how to superimpose a text on a data stream. i want to draw rectangle over running video

any help on the documentation or any ideas or any code snippet that might help me enhance the application will be very helpfull.

What I have tried:

I placed transparent panel on video window and try to draw on that panel .but as preview starts drawing of panel disappears.
