Replacing value in a data-frame within some logical range

How can i replace value from a dataframe within some logical range?.
Column name should be string.

selCoumn <- 'carb'
mtcars$selCoumn [mtcars$selCoumn  >= 1 & mtcars$selCoumn  <= 2] <- ">=1 & <=2"

i am getting the below error.

Error in `$<-.data.frame`(`*tmp*`, "<pre lang="C#">selCoumn&quot;, value=character(0)): 
  replacement has 0 rows, data has 38232 </pre>
