Message signing in web api

Hi,
i am writing the web api for the banking project. I need to work on security. Its an SSL request. Client will be passing the client certificate in the request and i am validating it in the server (web api). Now they are asking me to implement the Message signing ,please can any one explain what is meant by message signing should i encrypt the json data and send in the request or something else.
