Trying to open an MP4 File that:
- was packaged to only work in a home grown application
- problem is developer is no longer around, and i need to edit the video files

When trying top open the video file, I receive an error stating
- unsupported format
- file may be damaged

The video plays fine in the custom user interface application that was developed.
It appears there is some type of block for this to only play in the custom application.

Anyway to get around this and play in other applications?

1. What player you are trying to play with?
2. It is very difficult or sometimes impossible to decrypt an encrypted file based on the algorithm used to encrypt.
3. Workaround: Record the video to your format using screen recording softwares like
Camstudio[^]

Depends - you need the original source code to tell. The easiest way to do it is to encrypt the video data so that only the specific application can decrypt and view it. If so, then you need to know both how it was encrypted, and what encryption key was used. Without the source, that's pretty much impossible.
