authentication using smart card C#

I'm wanting to design an program that requires users to insert an smart card into the reader and the program to detect and authenticate it theres very few articles on the net on this issue
how would i go about achieving this and what is the best way to authenticate?

any help will be greatful

That's an incomplete question.
Which smart card reader are you using?
Haven't your vendor provide any API or SDK kind of stuffs along with the device?
