why $expand returning null value

I have two table
Documents & Pages
with foreign key relationship

when i am using query in my WEB API

../odata/Documents?$expand=Pages

in odata Results its returning---> [Docid=1,Name="My Doc",...,Pages=null]

Why it's returning null value instead of expanding Page properties?
