How about putting more vote numbers next to the rating? General, gold, bronze and platinum icons with their averages next to the total average rating? This way, a person can determine who his best and worst audience is. This is useful mostly for the articles.

While I am seldom in the "not kid sister" friendly soapbox, I do not think removing the voting would increase responses much. It seems if a person is casting a vote and not adding a response, may not think it is worth their time to post anyway.
I know for me, I have never replaced a response with a vote. If I feel the need response, I do it with a post. Votes are simply a method to say you agree or not with a post. Would hate to see 25 posts saying simply "Yep, I agree", or "Not for me"...

I agree with this, at least the bit about disabling voting. In the other forums, voting can work to highlight or de-emphasize especially good or bad posts. But the nature of The Soapbox causes a good deal of polarization WRT public opinion - a post can go from red to gray to neither in the space of an afternoon, based on who happens to be reading at the time.
Worse yet is the possibility that voting discourages people from replying. I doubt that this is so common, yet seeing a post with only 1-votes and only positive replies indicates that it might - obviously, there is disagreement, but rather than share with the rest of us the reader leaves his ambiguous "1" and moves on.
Now, i wouldn't mind seeing voting replaced with a kill file feature...

Is it possible, when you click on a person's personal profile, to see your average rating number for all articles and messages that you've rated for that person, at the bottom of his/her page? A link that has all message correspondences between you and them could also be added.

That would be like a detailed "you like/dislike this person" info field. The other way round it would be more useful:
On my personal profile I want to see the average rating of my articles and the average rating of my messages. If both numbers are less than 3, I know that I'm doing something badly wrong.

And my messages page can't be displayed, I get error 505 evertime I try to load it. Not only today - it has been the same error for weeks, and with all messages pages, not only with my page. One day long ago, I think it had worked, but I cannot remember any average rating line.

The Messages Posted link works from Midnight to around 3 AM only.  It's been a very busy year for Code Project, but it does work. As for the article rating, you're right, that is, however, available at the upper-right corner of each article. It would be nice if it was added to your article page. It's unusual because it is added to the My Bookmarks page, but that's usually only for other users.

There is a little "trick". There is that textbox underneath the Code Project logo on top of the site. If you do a search for "Corinna John" and select "Author" from the dropdown list you get much more information.

Me too. At least sometimes. It usually works when there isn't much traffic on the site. The only thing that sometimes helps is hitting reload until you get the actual page.

This has probably been raised many times before, but I did not find it with a search for RSS.
Would be cool if the forums had an RSS feed. I know that it would drop the page view count, but a text ad at the bottom of each post still might provide a means of revenue and allow people the ease of an aggregated view in their RSS client.

I'd like to follow up the post Beer26 made on the subject of Linux/Unix sections. I really think there's a lot of mileage in providing developers with articles that will equip them to step outside exclusive world of Microsoft. For example I was planning on writing an article about running Apache with Mono for ASP.Net in Linux. I can't see that there's anything to loose here.

Pretty soon I won't be using win anymore to code, and I really like code project, and I was wondering if you could put partisan politics aside and make a linux/unix section for reusable C++ classes?
Here is a sample of what I mean

As you can see making something simple like a reusable http get class is not any harder on *nix than win. Sure it doesn't have methods for cookies, get and post, but this is just an example I whipped up quickly for use here.
*nix C++ is no less reusable or OO than Win C++ and It really would be a positive thing to have an online cataloged library of it here.

I donno... might actually help to kill some of that "grass is greener" attitude that grows so quickly when you're writing for a platform by necessity rather than choice. See how the other half lives, etc.

I code on both with C, C++ and java, and let me tell you, the API and frameworks are shockingly similar. Socket programming, as you could see in the class I posted is very much like winsock.
GDI is very much like Gnome GDI, and MFC is similar to GTKmm. Glade and Glade2 is similar to the RAD forms tool in visual studio, and the unix curses library is similar to conio.h from the win library.
pthread library for POSIX threads is almost exactly like the windows C++ threading model with beginthread(&address, pvoid); and the rest of the win API, it's very similar to POSIX, but not quite. This happens alot between win and linux, similar constructs, but not exactly.
Then there are also differences between the two platforms, like the compilers and tools most people use.
I think if anything people would see how similar the 2 systems are as far as libraries to interface with C++. I'm not talking about stuff like COM or OLE, but rather win32.

Do you really think that Chairman Gates and Company deserve respect for the beta quality software they sell to you? That's right you paid money for it and as such are entitled to reasonable expectations that it actually works out of the box.
If "trustworthy computing" is more than a marketing hype why do some Micro$$$$$$oft products still have buffer overruns?
Think back to programming 101. Weren't you taught to test so that you do not do something foolish like try to put 10 Kg of s**t into a 5 Kg buffer?
When Micro$$$$$oft releases professional quality software then I will show them respect. Until then I will not turn away clients but I will not be politically correct when I make references to them.
