I use Windows Media Player 10 for my media files. I also use media player for listening
to & previewing of songs and videos on music.msn.com and movies.msn.com. Since a
few days, i have all of a sudden started getting an error whenever i click on the
play/preview button on music.msn.com or movies.msn.com for any song or video clip.
The error states :
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is not supported.
If you typed a URL in the Open URL dialog box, try using a different transport protocol
(for example, "http:" or "rtsp:").
the error still persists .. i hv even tried re-installing media player but to no
avail ... plz help me

I have cox communications business HSI (high speed internet) so I have all open ports and can run servers. I have a W2K3 server at home and can connect to my RDWC internal. I can bring up the server through IE on my laptop.
When I try and connect to my server outside my network I get the following errors:
(when I enter the IP address of my server)
http://jupiter.walagata.com/w/nvethis/error.JPG
(when I enter the server name)
http://jupiter.walagata.com/w/nvethis/error2.JPG
I have port forwarding enabled to my server for 80, 25, 110, 3389, etc.
Thanks for any help.

Hi
I have a batch file that calls an executable to perform some pausing and resuming of services during a backup process. My question is there a way to have some error reporting in the batch file say a "script error" or something along those lines. Thanks in advance.

In my opinion, you may plan you code what to do when it will running. For example your code have 5 actions to perform, so at the end of each section you should write any code to output to the file to inform that it is running successfully. So when your batch file run it will output to the file or append to the file (base on what you specify) if the action in your code is running successfully, but if you write anything wrong and your code stop running unexpectly it won't write any result to the file (the file that you specify the path and file name). So you might know where the code is reach it process.

Hi there !
I would request for your esteemed opinion, in case you feel this could be of help in my context.
I have a peculiar problem. It goes as follows -
I have got a multithreaded windows ( windows 2000 ) app running.
I am using a CreateEvent() to create an event object. It goes like this -
CreateEvent(NULL, // no security attributes
TRUE, // manual reset event
FALSE, // not-signalled
"RASNOTIF_EV");
Subsequently using OpenEvent(), in the following manner -
RasEvnt = OpenEvent (SYNCHRONIZE | EVENT_MODIFY_STATE, FALSE, (LPCTSTR)"RASNOTIF_EV");
Now, on rare occassions the above OpenEvent call fails and the GetLastError retirns a value of 2; => ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND
I came across the following info in this context -
"The last parameter indicates the name of a kernel object. You cannot pass NULL for this parameter;
you must pass the address of a zero-terminated string.
The functions search the single name space of kernel objects attempting to find a match.
If no kernel object with the specified name exists, the functions return NULL and GetLastError returns 2 (ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND). "
In the context of the Windows 2000 API call OpenEvent, I seek to understand as to what might be causing this ? And, if this is because of an error at Kernel level because of whatever reasons - is it possible that the system reboots owing to this ?
Please share your esteemed thoughts on this critcial issue I am facing.
Thanks !

If you're trying to use the same event from two (or more) threads in the same app, simply use the same handle. Keep the handle in a global location, or pass it into the ThreadProc.
If you're trying to use the same event from two (or more) different apps (or instances of the same app), you'd typically call CreateEvent in each app's code. If you need to know whether this call actually created it, call GetLastError immediately after CreateEvent succeeds. If this call created the object, it will return 0 (ERROR_SUCCESS). If the object already existed, it will return ERROR_ALREADY_EXISTS.
I've never used OpenEvent.
I suspect the problem you're running into is some form of race condition - either the creator hasn't created it yet, or the other apps have quit and there are no handles open to it, so the kernel deletes it.
Stability. What an interesting concept. -- Chris Maunder

My hard drive start to make a worring noise, so I decided to put in another drive and use Norton Ghost to clone the original hard drive.
The original hard drive was 80GB and the new one 120GB.
But when I first put in the second drive(jumper set to slave) the PC failed to boot. I checked the connections etc but only got it to work when I place the original cable into the Master drive and the spare connector connector in the slave drive.
My question is "Does it matter what connector you use for each drive"?
e.g. Original setup just the single drive (set as Master)
Motherboard----------<connector>----------<master>
This did not work
Motherboard----------<master>----------<slave>
But this did
Motherboard----------<slave>----------<master>

I would like give you some idea: Remove your 80GB hard drive then connect your 120GB drive and set jumper to master and detect in your CMOS. If it is working it mean that when you connect with 80GB you might set wrong jumper or did not configure properly in CMOS. But if you connect only 120GB and it is not working it might be your mainboard do not support the size of the hard disk drive. As far as I know each mainboard must have it limitation for other component when working together. Try to check your mainboard manual, how high the maximum capacity of hard disk drive that it will support.

I have both drives present on my computer and have cloned my other drive - not tested it yet.
The question was to do with the cable; I though it did not matter which way it was connected.
e.g.
original situation
<motherboard>--------<spare>-------------<old drive="">
now this did not work!
<motherboard>--------<old drive="">-------------<new drive="">
but this did
<motherboard>--------<newdrive>-------------<old drive="">
Are they anythink special with the cable (I thought it did not matter the way you connected the hard drives.

Ok, If you think it is become the cable, try to change the new cable from the other machine.

In hard drives I've installed, I've noticed jumper settings for "cable select." If your origonal hard drive was set up for cable select, then your first attempt would have put two slave drives in your computer, but your second attempt would have correctly made your first hard drive a master.
In short, if "cable select" means the obvious, then the cable connectors can matter if one of the drives is configured that way.

How do you uninstall a Windows Service without the service's binary. For instance,
installutil -u MyService.exe
Fine, as long as you have the binary. Now, what if you don't? I'm asking because Oracle Universal installer screwed up half way during the installation process and it left some installed Windows Services on my system which I can't uninstall...
btw, there IS A TOOL that can do this. I've done this some two years ago, but I can't remember what this is and where to get it... damn...

Click the first file. Hold the Shift key down and click the last file. All files in between should then be selected. Right click on the highlighted area and choose Copy. Right click the destination folder and select Paste.

Roger, Is it possible to copy the file in FTP folder via the command prompt? I think if it is possible the owner of the question copy it via MSDOS prompt.
