Hi,
Do anyone know how to change LAN connection settings by code/script?
More specific I want to change the LAN authentication settings for multiple clients in a company network (Win2K domain).
I want to automate the process of changing the settings for all the computers, either by using a logon script or something similar.
The client are running Windows XP.

We have an off-site employee who's running Symantic Corporate Edition on his laptop, same as our internal users. Internally, we don't allow users to change their LiveUpdate settings, and the button to do so is disabled. Obviously, a remote user will need to be able to control this themselves, but his LiveUpdate settings button is also grayed out. So the question is how can I get his Symantic install to allow him to control these settings?

Can't remember how I managed to allow offsite users to manually LiveUpdate their systems when I had everything set to update from a local LiveUpdate server I had setup. Almost 3 years since gtting the arse and no closer to getting back to the big end of town.
Can't they just download the 4.5MB virus update executable and manually run it to keep upto date?

Not sure, to be honest. What I ended up doing was creating a package specific to off-site users, and shipped it to him on a CD, along with instructions on how to uninstall the version he has, and install this one. We'll see how it goes.

The default www.codeproject.com address hasn't worked in days now, and instead of the quaint error messages I used to receive, I now get the generic HTTP/1.1 500 Server Error message. This is a lot like the behavior I'm seeing from my own webserver since installing SP4 and all of the latest updates from Microsoft. There's a checkbox in IE that enables Show Friendly Error Messages which is supposed to supress technical messages, which I have unchecked. And IE6 now appears to ignore wildcards in URLs placed in the trusted sites zone, too. For example, adding http://w*.codeproject.com used to expand to all hosts in the codeproject domain, but that no longer works. This is becoming tedious, having to sneak in the back door after every reply to a post.
At least it works once I get in - that's far better than my server! Why, oh why did I ever let this lot talk me into giving Windows Update another chance?  I can't even look at http://localhost/IISHelp to find clues - it won't let me in at all, or return any meaningful error message. No wonder Apache is so popular...

I'm trying to update Windows 2000 SP2 to SP4
It hangs at the stage "running processes after install."
When I killed the dialog and rebooted, system->about suggests that SP4 has been installed correctly. There are no apparent problems (though I've only tried a few apps. so far).
I've hunted around in newsgroups, etc. and a number of items suggest stopping the IIS Admin service. However, it won't let me do that. I then tried disabling IIS Admin and reinstalled SP4. Still hangs.
I then tried stopping each of the dependent services, ftp publishing, world wide web, smtp. It won't let me stop those either. Help!
Does anyone know a way round this?
If not can I assume that SP4 is installed correctly?
I need to have it installed in order to install VS .NET 2003.

One possibility is to go to Services and disable startup of the Web services, then reboot. Install SP4 again, reboot, then enable Web services again as Automatic.

I was eventually able to disable IIS Admin, reboot and reinstall SP5. I also stopped my SQL Server service but I think that was a red herring.
Anyway, I was eventually able to install Visual Studio .NET, which was the object of the exercise - though I had problems with this too!

Hi, does any one know why windows explorer in windows xp hide the status bar by default? When you start new windows xp there is not status bar. From windows 95 until windows 2000 the status bar of windows explorer is display by default and the tree view has a line to indicate the level of folder which is difference from windows xp.

Memmory useage. If you install a lot of stuff on your machine, test out a lot of programs, that could be what is slowing you down. Another possibility is Spyware and Adware. To make it faster, try reinstalling your OS. I have to do that from time to time.

Hi, I have a problem with MS-DOS prompt in windows 98. When I use DOS command (which stand on windows) when I pressed the “/” it display “-“ for example when I type the following command “dir /a” it display “dir –a”. I have check in the keyboard language but it still remains in English-United State. When I return to Ms Word, everything is fine. I don’t know why it become like that but it is really made me difficult to work with MS-DOS.

Hi, I have a problem when I install the new CD writer into my computer. I use CD writer sony crx1611 with main board Intel Celeron 2 GHZ. Before I start to install windows I configure some configuration in CMOS. Before and after install the operating system on my computer when I start or restart the computer the CD tray (the place to hold the CD) always come out for 2 or 3 second and get in again. I don’t know why it becomes like that? It is not a big problem but it made me annoyed when it comes out every time when the computer is started or restarted.

It's no wonder your PC has been slowing down! You've got a Celeron! Oh man I feel sorry for you. Next time, get a P4, or something else, but the worst you can get is a Celeron. Even AMD is better.

On the site you have written a program that will ID the Operating system. Can I use this to scan my entire Network,and if so will it work in ID'ing all different operating systems?

Hi all. I've got a user whose running Windows 2000, SP3. She was attacked by a Trojan called Download.Trojan that reset her IE home page, and installed the following files on her PC under WinNT\System32, including a batch file to download these files off the net, and execute them:
install2.exe
infamous_downloader.exe
0021-bdl94126.EXE
CS4P028.exe
silent.exe
I deleted the files, and reset her IE home page, but now she can't connect to the internet at all. She can browse the network, check her Exchange email from Outlook, and such. She just can't browse the internet. I reinstalled SP3, deleted and reinstalled her TCP/IP connection, and even tried giving her a static IP address (normally, our users have dynamically assigned IP's).
Anybody familiar with this?

Have you tried clearing the cache in IE? Delete all temporary files, cookies, and any offline content; sometimes this restores IE to a working state after an infection is cleared out.

Yup, tried all that. End solution: rebuilt her system from scratch.  Not a terribly complex thing, of course, but should not have been necessary. Oh well.

Some spyware puts itself in the Winsock LSP (layered service provider) list. If you just nuke the files without repairing that list too, you may end up in just your situation. I did some quick searches but couldn't find good info on LSPs; your best bet is probably to use AdAware or Spybot.
