How about using a nice cross-browser WYSIWYG editor. It would be nice to be able to easily create links, highlight code etc. when posting a comment with FireFox or Mozilla.
http://www.freetextbox.com/Default.aspx looks nice.

How about using a [textarea] for all browsers + an "open clickety-editor" button for IE?
Everytime I try to submit an article (okay, that was not too often yet) the page tells me that I have to use Netscape or IE.
Mozilla is nearly a Netscape, but Bob is too stupid to understand it, so I have to re-logon with IE and try again. Then I have to wait for the WYSIWYG editor to load, until I can click the "HTML" button and paste the article into the text field.
I cannot remember that I had ever needed the WYSIWYG editor, but that thing is the only reason why I still have IE installed. Give me a simple text field for my Mozilla browser and I'll be really happy.

On reflection, WYSIWYG is overkill, all I really want is the simple functionality that IE users have - a textarea with some javascript buttons to do links etc.
I see the smiley toolbar, why can't I see the other toolbar?

Try my Article Writer Helper. There may be some IE only functionality but most of it should work since its mainly javascript.

That looks nice, but I was really just talking about the editor for adding comments in the forums. It shouldn't be too hard to modify it to work for non IE browsers.

I would like to suggest that you give users the option of having threads in the forum displayed by either the time of the thread's start or the time of the last post in it.
Every other forum I visit sorts threads by the time of the last post and I prefer this option by far over the current implementation.
If this option is already available, well, never mind.

It's already available but unfortunately it kills the server. It'll be available in the next version of the forums, but until then...

They should add more competitions or tell us before they actually make them, also some of us are still not using .net, I did try it once but found it ok, I probably will transfer to using .net eventually but right now I'm sticking to writing games in DirectX.
P.S. This contest was up for like a couple of MONTHS now!!!

When I get an email because someone has posted in my Blog (Personal Page) on CP, I get an email notification which says that "A new reply has been posted to the discussions at 'Personal Page for Member 22542'".
Would it be possible to change it so that instead of saying "Member 22542" it says the member name, in this case "Colin Angus Mackay"?

i don't have problem when i receive notification mails... In fact, yes, this centence appear into the mail just before giving the link, but the expeditor of the mail is the nickname of the one who answered your post.

In the case of each user's personal blog forum the the email arrives giving the forum name as 'Personal Page for Member 22542'. It would be better if it said, for example, the "Personal Page for Colin Angus Mackay".

hi chris,
i've got a little suggestion for you. in fact, that is a functionality that i saw on my university web site, an which i find interresting to apply here.
i don't exactly know how it works (certainly a javascript piece of code). it refreshes the page every xx seconds (xx can be modified in a combo box in the page, but you're not obliged to implement it). that could permit us while being on one (or more) forum(s) to always see the pages actualised, without explicitely clicking on the (refresh) link on the top of the board. that is particularly useful when you're not always behind your PC watching for new posts...

I assume that there are a lot of people browsing CP at the same time, some people will leave the browser open in the background, if they all poll the server for nothing, it will put a strain on the server for nothing.
Some application already do that, on some level, RSS aggregator will pull a xml stream at some interval, but usually, RSS streams are lightweight compared to a full CP page ( for example ).
