hi chris,
i've got a little suggestion for you. in fact, that is a functionality that i saw on my university web site, an which i find interresting to apply here.
i don't exactly know how it works (certainly a javascript piece of code). it refreshes the page every xx seconds (xx can be modified in a combo box in the page, but you're not obliged to implement it). that could permit us while being on one (or more) forum(s) to always see the pages actualised, without explicitely clicking on the (refresh) link on the top of the board. that is particularly useful when you're not always behind your PC watching for new posts...

I assume that there are a lot of people browsing CP at the same time, some people will leave the browser open in the background, if they all poll the server for nothing, it will put a strain on the server for nothing.
Some application already do that, on some level, RSS aggregator will pull a xml stream at some interval, but usually, RSS streams are lightweight compared to a full CP page ( for example ).

a thought of a java script which could avoid me clicking on the refresh link... that would automate the gest i do myself...

Doesn't matter. You're still making requests to the server to process the page and send it back to the client. That's what Max was talking about. There's just no reason for it. Any time you want to see if new content was posted, just refresh the page yourself.

There's a lot of great content here, with more arriving each day. I see two forces:
1) It's desirable that the articles be able to be browsed as a web, but right now it's rare for authors to link to other articles in their own. Hence, if you browse the CP article-web you won't get far.
2) The best way of currently finding articles on a concept is to browse the article categories. I'm not saying that we should do away with the categories-- we really can't. However, drilling down into categories this way doesn't let you read an abstract of a concept, with links to helpful articles in the middle that explain facets of the topic, and links to related concepts at the bottom. I'm positive that there's a Wiki tool out there that would allow CP to serve CP-branded Wiki content with minimal modification.
I really like Wikipedia. It's the closest thing to a decent FAQ for the world's knowledge that I've seen. However, it isn't focused on Windows and .NET, and it doesn't keep people on this site. A Wiki focused on Windows and .NET, backed up by great articles from the site, would increase the ease of navigation of the articles, decrease the number of stupid questions if presented as a FAQ in the right places, and be of more interest and use to the CP community in general. Also, it would allow serving more ad impressions if desirable.
Wikis don't have to be editable by anonymous people, and I wouldn't advocate that for this either; in particular I wouldn't want someone to be able to delete content from someone else. I thought through a few options:
1) Let only those of a certain rank edit the Wiki
- Discarded, since it's too easy to achieve high rank; witness Daniel Stephen Rule and his accursed chatbots. The only rank I'd use this way would be platinum, but to set the bar this high would be to reject the contributions of people who don't have the time to write 25 articles.
2) Grant certain decent people the right to edit the Wiki, without being full editors of the site
- Pros: gives some people more personal stake in the site, pools greater talent and experience for the Wiki, and allows for a much larger volume of input, while inherently filtering spam; if someone abuses their role, just undo the badness and remove their access, something which might never have to happen
3) Let the current editors edit the Wiki
- Pros: complete control over content probably guarantees highest quality
- Cons: less grassroots power, smaller Wiki
4) Let the current editors edit the Wiki, and approve content that could be submitted by anyone
- Pros: complete control, bigger Wiki, gives people the chance to contribute in an easier way than writing articles
- Cons: increases the load on editors, even though approving a well-written entry or change wouldn't take long; also would possibly require more integration work to make it work smoothly with the Code Project website
Just some thoughts I've been having for a couple of weeks now.
[EDIT] Submissions in #4 could easily be implemented with a simple form that would send email to a special address or just dump the content into a table. The editor could then copy and paste the content into the Wiki using his/her normal access, making slight modifications if necessary. [/EDIT]

Currently we have a menu option for "My Settings", "My Bookmarks" and "My Articles".
It would make life easier if there was one for "My Blog" too. Or even a link from the "My Settings" page to the blog page.

Hi Chris , thanks fir new ToolBar but when menus frop down , it stay behind the comboboxe which indicate number of message shown in one page. I mean the menu for message board.

that's it... i was coming here to say so, but as it's been already written.
anyway, i'd like to suggest to that new Toolbar to draw a border also, i find it more attractive, more beautiful. i also prefered the old colors of the TBar, but i don't decide of it i only suggest.

While I agree that 30 minutes is an egregious time lag, and admit that any discussion of the size of the article backlog would necessarily entail a wonderfully engaging side thread on the applications of the Infinite Improbability Theory, I must protest this post.

I would like to be able to subscribe to the RSS feed of an article's forum.
There are some interesting discussions going on in some and it can be a chore visiting each article I am monitoring to check if a new post has been made.

How about a seperate section for the ever more important internationalisation aspect of programming.
I recently found a really good translation tool in the Free Tools section after searching repeatedly for the wrong name .

Only if it isn't called I18N. Sorry if this sounds like too much typing, but if I can type antidisestablishmentarianism (A26M if you must abbreviate it) others can surely type internationalisation. Also, international readers my not understand this abbreviation as they don't have sufficient cultural context (Heck! Even I didn't know what I18N meant until about 3 months ago)

I receive your news letter which I find it very interesting. However, all authors use apparently notepad to write ther projects without including instructions on how to implement ther tips and ideas. I suggets that each author takes into consideration the fact that not everybody knows everything.
I have just downloaded the demo code for "Building a custom ASP.NET Tabstrip Control" written by Doug Wilson, put it in the root of my IIS, called the prjpage.aspx from IE, nothing works
