I am a senior engineer with a major insurance company in NYC and I am extremely well versed in MFC/ATL/COM.

For two years now, I've been reading about .Net, and nothing, I mean NOTHING, has convinced me that it is anything more than a new Microsoft "flavor of the month". With all the hype surrounding .Net, I need someone to convince me that learning it WILL be the worth my time and effort. Forget all of Microsoft's rhetoric about betting the company, etc., I need someone to tell me why .Net is better...

Writing >>>good<<< code used to be an artform. Some of us are really good at it; most out there are not. It looks to me as if Microsoft is now taking the hand holding approach to the extreme. Writing something in MFC? There are now wizards that do just about everything. What about ATL/COM? No more IDL. What happened to DESIGNING an interface before coding it... Maybe I'm just an old dinosaur who actually enjoys his craft and who thinks writing concise, highly-optimized code is fast becoming a lost art. I can't be the only one who feels this way...

I can hear you youngsters out there now... "Resistance is futile, you WILL be assimilated!"

Am I really becoming extinct? Must I be dragged in kicking and screaming? Please, someone, convince me that .Net IS the future.
