I would like to play a movie clip using DirectShow on my dialog-based app. Is this possible?
Does anyone have a (working) sample code that does it, or maybe an article or web site?
preferably non-full frame.

I am working on a article concerning video playback in response to the article
"Multimedia Streaming Synchronization Mechanisms Under DirectShow" - An overview of three methods on how to perform multimedia streaming by Stephane Rodriguez.
Can take a week or 2 though,
if you want to see example code, I could send you the preliminary (but working) code.
Stephanes code works on PCs with little CPU and Video Cards of less than 4 MB videoram.
My code works better on >= 8 MB Video Ram cards.

Btw, it is not a win32 app, is it? Because I am really new at this DirectX stuff, and I already have my project half done in an MFC dialog-based app. All I need to do now is the ability to play a movie clip file (non-streaming) using DirectShow.

Can anyone submit an article on patching binary files?
I've tried myself, but the results are not very good: I get a patch file as big as the file compared 
What I need is something like RTpatch, but free and with sources 
If someone is interested I can send him my not-very-good code as a starting point.

Have you looked into the GNU tools for patching? They're free under GNU copyleft, provide source and are available on most platforms including Windows. Check any GNU archive for a copy or see the Gnu web site for more information.

The GNU tools (diff and patch) are good only for text files.
I need a patcher for binary files.

They handle binary files in CVS, so some of the gnu tools must have been adapted to do this.

You should investigate the patch dll that comes with the Microsoft Windows Installer SDK.
This DLL has a function that accepts two files and outputs a third file that contains the 'patch' information to cause the first file to be transformed into the second file.
Another function in the DLL can 'apply' the patch.
There are various options for compression and such in the API.

I am trying to design a GUI for a java application for a project I am working on.
Most of the available examples and refernces are for Applets,so I am looking for some
reference material for designing GUI's in Java Applications!
How do I go about displaying a gif in a Java Application..
using an applet - drawImage() is used, but is not effective it would appear with an Application.
The gif I am displaying is that of a blank Backgammon board.
I am also trying to find out how to represent the board, or divide it up so that when the user
gives their choice of where to move their chips on the board, the game will know where
on the board the player is refering to.
If anyone can assist me with this i would be very grateful!

Developing Professional Java Applets, by K.C. Hopson and Stephen E. Ingram, ISBN 1-57521-083-5 had examples of how to display graphics with various file formats. There shouldn't be too much difference in doing this for an applet or an application. I even saw code at one time that would let you use the same source code as both an application and an applet.
There should also be several examples on the web. I know I've run across quite a few discussion on graphics topics like double buffering. It shouldn't matter too much if the examples you run across are for applets either. The graphics techniques will most likely be the same.

How about a non-dockable control bar child of CView.
I have an mapping application that needs a scale bar floating within the CScrollView client area. I tried experimenting with owner-drawn CButton but it scrolls too when the client area is scrolled! I also tried CControlBar and successfully restricted its dragging within the client area. But if we move the mainframe, ugh!! And it is always top window. So if we open several documents or views the control bars are sprawled all over!!!
Requirements:
1. Non-docking
2. Can be dragged around client area but...
3. always stays within the client area
4. Preferably sticky on client edges
5. Moves when the childframe is moved
6. Not top-most window

This really doesn't sound hard.
My approach would be to make a standard child-window (of the view-frame). By being a child it will float above the view. Handle the WM_GETMINMAX handle to contain any movement to the view->GetClientRect [any coord tweaks necessary]. In the same handler you can weight positioning of the window when reaching the edges.
You would also have to update the position of the window when its parent moves. A few dozen lines of code at most!

Thank you for your idea. It works. This is very similar to my first approach which used a CButton. It is really not hard.
But I have a slight problem - I get ugly flickers when I scroll the View. This is because of my desire the keep the control in the same position during scroll. So after every scroll, I have to MoveWindow. (That's why I tried before on WS_POPUP styles/control bars - I wanted the scrolls not affect the position of the control.)
Any ideas?

I don't really use the Doc/View system, but if I understand correctly, you are making the control a child of the view rather than a child of the "frame". If the control is a child of the frame, it will not be repositioned when the view is scrolled (it is a sibling rather than a child of the view).

I would love to see some code that demostrates the proper way to throw and catch exceptions without using MFC.
I am supposed to derive my own class from std::exception, use with win32 command RaiseException() or do I just create my own exception class.
Which is the preferred method?

Is there an example of a list control where the text in any column wraps (changes the row height and the text appears underneath) if it is longer than the column width?
Michael Dunn wrote an article where he said he acheived this by handling the NM_CUSTOMDRAW message, but he didn't show any code on how to do it.
Does anybody know how to do this?

Hi !!
I'd like to find a way to intercept all displayed texts (on controls, menu, dialog box) for an application.
The goal is to intercept such messages and translate text before they are displayed on the application.
I think i should use a hook and functions like EnumWindows in order to perform translation.
Such a tool still exists but i think it's very good approach in order to enable Multilanguage application.
We can imagine that for one application we exports all texts then translate them into a database or ascii file.
Then the Dynamic Translator Application intercepts messages for a specified application and translate them before they are displayed.
Who has already tries to do such a think ?
The only one tool that perfectly fills the goal is WizTom (85 000 $ !!!!!!).
Who can help or give some answers ?

I suppose your talking about not requiring code changes to an existing application, and also that you aren't simply talking about modifying the table of resource strings.
Fundamentally I guess, Windows must use one of DrawText, DrawTextEx, or TextOut to accomplish it's own text painting requirements, so intercepting these calls, determining which windows are being written to, and dynamically replacing text should be possible.
I've never done this, but I imagine in what you are proposing that the size of the text and the translated text will be different, so there will be clipping and layout problems.
Also, you'd need to differentiate between the text painting calls that were being made for the labels, titles, etc., from those that were actually the "interactive" parts of the application. For example, in a data input form, I'd want to replace the text labels, but not the edit box contents...

There are a few password sniffing programs I've seen that do this (I hope this is not what you are trying to do...
You could install a CBT (Computer based training) hook which will give you notifications of most things that occur on the desktop. When a window opens you could, as you say, enumerate the windows and call GetWindowText on each (this will give you the text). Shouldn't be too hard...
If you work it out then it would make a great article...

Working on developing international applications myself, I'd say (assuming you have the source-code) that you should re-write some small parts of your code to ensure all strings are within a resource file or a language DLL and you replace all of your string initialisations with a call to retrieve a given enumerated string from there. Hot switching languages then becomes a case of switching between DLL's and is a damn sight easier (assuming you can re-initalise all of your user-interface components).
I have a derived CString class that stops me from being lazy, since it must retrieve information from such a source.
If you don't have the source code then your results, with the proposed solution, will be variable at best! Many strings are concatinated and decorated with information on the fly... automatic translation of these, especially where word order or tenses can change as the result of some other setting would make this very hard!
