Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has a sample framework for a simple
installation application, i.e. a wizard-like dialog with next, previous
finish buttons. The dialogs should be very simple, merely getting some
simple input (strings) from the user. Btw; this is for NT4.0/Win2K.

i tryed put this question at many programmers servers and sent mail about to microsoft
but noone knows and they ignore it/me
for my language (slovak) is (in all) windows bug in string comparing
(needs add something like vocabulary of exceptions)
so if i really need good sorting solution i can't use f.e. excel but i must
export data and use old good (dos) program
have anyone any idea how to hack/hook to it (into any windows)?
of where to start to find it? can be any com interface? is any spy for it? registry entry?

added later because of possible misunderstanding:
i mean national-dependent string comparing possibly used in every windows application
when i try sort texts in excel with slovak language as a windows default language it in some cases not sorts correctly
in my language we have more letter than in english, take a example: a, long-a (line over character), width-a (two dots over character) etc. with another letters, biggest problem is that ch combination is sometimes taken as a one letter (in alphabet table: ... h ch i ...) sometimes as a c and h characters), microsoft it still takes as a ch-letter
i believe it is in any windows system dll but i do not know how to hook to it to improve this

There are specialized international sort functions that allow sorting of language dependant strings. It helps if you use unicode. Also sorting will be dependent on the underlying charset used. look up the CHARSETINFO struct

i do not need how to call system string comparing function(s) but how to improve them
f.e. make in-ms-excel sorting working properly (for my language)

Yahoo created an activeX control that is created when every instance of IE starts. I don't know how exactly they accomplished this. But, you could alternatively use a COM object and register it as a toolbar inside IE. The COM object would need to support IDeskBand. If this is the route you decide to implement, my article under ATL creates the necessary classes in your com object to get you started.

I haven't used this Yahoo thingy, but it's easy to have a COM object that gets instantiated in every instance of Explorer/IE - browser helper objects.

in win2k shells the network icon doesnt show up in the system trays, and neither will the status... for dialup nor lan...
no one seems to know what the code is to add this function..
the only 2 rumors i hear going around is its a com or application that loads it... can anyone shed some light on this for me, i really would like to get this option to work
in any shell other than explorer.

You have to turn this option on. It is on the property sheet for your network connection, "Show Icon in taskbar when connected." on the "General" tab.

and it doesnt show up in my system.... or use litestep or geoshell for example.. how would i write the code for it to work.. is it a com option or an executable? or is it only loaded through the explorer shell...

I am looking for a time line or scheduling control that could be used to implement the following situation:
As an example, I have five deliverly men scheduled to work from 9:00 to 5:00. I would to display their names in a column on the left of the screen with a time line across the bottom. For each person I would like to show a bar that covers the times of each of his scheduled appointments. Each bar should show the start/stop time of the appointment and be lined up with time axis across the bottom. Zooming, panning, and printing would be a plus!
Does anyone know where I could find such a control???

Can someone please post a simple class of functions which export DIB's to different widely known formats such as PNG,JPG,ect. I've spent hours searching the net and downloading different libraries for this code.

for 24-bit DIBs, it's almost simple. unfortunately, in general, it's not simple.
DIBs come in many different flavors and it's ncessary to translate the DIB to a common intermediary format (such as raw RGB) before you can give it to any of the public doman PNG, JPG, TIFF, etc. libraries.
you might want to check out ImgSource : http://www.smalleranimals.com . this is a shameless plug, since i wrote it. but, at least i can claim to know what i'm talking about when i say it can handle DIB->RGB and RGB->TIFF,JPG,BMP,PNG,PCX,TGA,EMF, etc..
the source is available, so you can always figure out what it does and tailor it to suit your needs.

After going through like 5000 lines of Microsoft code I am still no close to implementing simple support for playback of multiple sounds at the same time. Pehaps somebody can create a simple wrapper class with simple functions like
int addtoplaylist(LPSTR filetoplay)
adds wav file to playlist, and returns an number
removefromplaylist(int soundnumber)
checksound(int soundnumber) cehck if sound is still playing

How do you check to see if there is a CD loaded in the CD-ROM when the drive door is closed, and how do you differentiate between the drive door being open/closed and the door being closed but the tray empty? I'm using assembly language, but even general info on this would be useful.

I am working on a article concerning video playback in response to the article
"Multimedia Streaming Synchronization Mechanisms Under DirectShow" - An overview of three methods on how to perform multimedia streaming by Stephane Rodriguez.
Can take a week or 2 though,
if you want to see example code, I could send you the preliminary (but working) code.
Stephanes code works on PCs with little CPU and Video Cards of less than 4 MB videoram.
My code works better on >= 8 MB Video Ram cards.

Btw, it is not a win32 app, is it? Because I am really new at this DirectX stuff, and I already have my project half done in an MFC dialog-based app. All I need to do now is the ability to play a movie clip file (non-streaming) using DirectShow.

I've tried myself, but the results are not very good: I get a patch file as big as the file compared 
What I need is something like RTpatch, but free and with sources 
If someone is interested I can send him my not-very-good code as a starting point.
