1. How to get a merchant account
You need to choose which service you'll use. Usually their web sites tell you how to get an account. Sometimes even your site hosting company will provide CC processing for a "smallish" fee as part of your SLA, that way you don't have to get a merchant account at all, just upgrade your hosting plan! If they do offer it, your hosting company should be able to answer your questions on what you need to do to actually accomplish this if you decide to go with their plan.

Yes. Some of these services allow you to do the final order as a secure session on their hosts, where you pass tokens along to them (such as user, order #, totals, etc.) if you don't have to have SSL on your site. Or...

...they provide a forms interface to their CC processing, or you run CGI, instantiate business objects, call a web service...it really is up to the CC processor provider you choose.
UB wrote:
4. How to validate the credit card number. Are there any reliable web services.
There are some free JavaScript CC # validators for the client side, to make sure they "hash" correctly. Otherwise, the service you choose will do validation as part of their CC processing.

If you're storing User information on your site, you should consider using SSL once the users have logged so the users information, orders, et al. are more secure.

CC Processor ... is this the same as "Payment Gateway". Is Nova a payment gateway. What are the other top gateways.
I really appreciate your help.
Thank you very much.

Nova is a payment processor, i.e. they take the credit card transaction and put the money in your bank account.
A gateway is simply a software package that works with a processor's defined message format to send your transactions for authorization and payment.
The fuzziness comes in when you consider that Nova, and other processors, also have their own gateways. Nova has viaKlix, but they also work with Verisign and Authorize.Net, two of the larger gateways.

If I'm using Verisign that means I don't need any additional software right ? Have you used Verisign?

Hi
You could use Caledon Card services for your merchant account. They seemlessly integrate to your site or cart, and provide a virtual terminal to accept by phone or mail at no extra charge, and at the same low rate.

(Note: using microsoft visual studio .net designer)
After trying to load my java applet from <OBJECT> tag (rather than <APPLET> tag), it renders fine, except when you click between the DESIGN view then back to HTML view,
the <PARAM NAME="ARCHIVE" VALUE="jars/myapp.jar"> line completely vanishes.
Click to HTML view again, and the applet just does not load or work (as would be expected now that archive tag has gone!). Re-add the vanishing tag and all is well again.
(As long as you do not click to change views you can save the page when the tag has been added then deploy and use the web site normally. Of course this is OK until you need to make changes and then it is dangerously likely that this tag line might vanish and be forgotten during the process!)
Anyone else experience this or have an idea of a work-around or WHY the MS designer does this ???
-- Code snippet...
<OBJECT codeBase="../" height="100%" width="100%" code="TreeApplet.class" name="MyTree" VIEWASTEXT>
<PARAM NAME="mayscript" VALUE="true">
<PARAM NAME="archive" VALUE="jars/myapp.jar">
<PARAM NAME="item0" VALUE="Hello">
<PARAM NAME="item1" VALUE="Goodbye">
...
</OBJECT>
|
|
|
|
|
Actually I found a further and perhaps related condition...
After you construct the <APPLET> and <OBJECT> tags, the contents seem to 'auto-sort', although not sure of the sort order.
For example...
<OBJECT .... >
<PARAM NAME="item1" VALUE="1">
<%-- Note about next value --%>
<PARAM NAME="item2" VALUE="1">
<PARAM NAME="action2" VALUE="1">
<%-- Note about next value --%>
<PARAM NAME="item3" VALUE="1">
<PARAM NAME="action3" VALUE="1">
</OBJECT>
After switching between the HTML / DESIGN VIEW PANES (AND/OR collapsing the tag) (although not always first time!) VS.NET designer 'autosorts' to...
<OBJECT .... >
<PARAM NAME="action2" VALUE="1">
<PARAM NAME="action3" VALUE="1">
<PARAM NAME="item1" VALUE="1">
<PARAM NAME="item2" VALUE="1">
<PARAM NAME="item3" VALUE="1">
<%-- Note about next value --%>
<%-- Note about next value --%>
</OBJECT>
You can see any note tags become irrelevant! Also, the order of the PARAMS is changed so that they are no longer in a natural order for editing.

well...the title says it all.
How in the heck do I do that...If possible, could I get the Direct way of doing so and the ODBC way.

I have HTML Content in various Database fields that i want to display on my webpage. The HTML Content in these db fields are not always "valid" HTML (the HTML is broken/malformed).
if i pull the HTML Content from the DB and display it on my webpage normally (server side) the broken HTML Content from these fields will mess up the overall structure of my page. To get around this problem currently i'm storing the HTML Content in a hidden field and with client side javascript copy the HTML Content to an IFRAME so if the HTML was broken it would not break beyond the IFRAME. This method makes the rending of the page jumpy because the page renders without the HTML content first then onload it populates the IFRAME then resizes to the right size. (generally there are about 10 different HTML Content fields i'm displaying on any given page).
anyone have a way to render the HTML server side without breaking the page if the HTML is broken? Id rather not use some 3rd party tool to massage the HTML Content before displaying it but not totally against the idea.
(its not an option to force the users to enter in valid HTML.)
Environment: WIN2K | ASP.NET | C# | IE6 ONLY
Thanks in advanced.

I m able to use Crystal report (8.5) into ASP (3.0), but I am not able see the report on client browser (IE6). For this crystal reports itself require to be install on client m/c, if so then it shows report in IE. Please help me to find out the way or any runtime files required to be have on client side. Because to install crystal report on each client is not feasible and possible for web reporting.

There are a variety of means to retrieve mail from a POP server using the .NET Framework. As a starting point, I suggest searching articles here on CP by typing in the search term "POP3". These methods involve connecting to a POP server via TCP/IP using TcpClient, etc., and parsing the results of various RFC standard POP3 commands.
On the other hand, there are several components developed by third-party vendors that support this, as well. For example, Quiksoft (http://www.quiksoft.com/[^]).

I have a working report called ReportOne.rpt which has 20 subreport attached to it and the same is called by a button click from an asp page.
These reports will be displayed in PDF format. Today, I made some changes(report format) in one of the sub_report and the Stored Procedure which derives the values to it. Now i am unable to run the report. While running it raises an error message
Error Type:
RptControllers.dll (0x8004100F)
Logon failed. Details: ADO Error Code: 0x80040e4d Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server Description:
Login failed for user 'm2user'. SQL State: 42000 Native Error: 18456

/M2Web/CrystalStartPageM2.asp, line 225
I am using SQL server 2000, Connecting to backend from main report is through ODBC and rest of the subreports are through SQL OLEDB provider.
All the subreports are linked with Main reports parameter like ID, and Type.
Thanks

I was wondering if there is a way to OVERLOAD Functions and Subs in classic ASP.
It would be very usefull...
Any tricks, ideas?

Classic ASP won't let you use overloads per se, and, if I remember correctly, you cannot use real VB parameters (like Optional ByVal ... As [Type]). I suppose the thing to try is to see if you can pass an array or a collection and have the function or sub behave differently depending on the number of elements in the list.
*thinking out loud* Also, if you define a function or sub with multiple parameters, and fail to pass one or more, does it error out at runtime? If it doesn't, you might be able to test using IsEmpty or IsNull or something on a param that wasn't passed...
Then again, you could define subs and functions in a VB6 DLL project with method signatures that use the Optional in the parameters list, making the sub or function "overloaded" and then calling the methods of the DLL from your classic ASP page...

Unfortunatelly it throws an error on runtime...
I have been spending 3 days to try and find a way to overcome this VBscript limitation and the only solution that is feasible is the ARRAY solution.
Thank you anyway...

I am using geocities to host my website, they offer an HTML editor. What I am trying to do is find out what OS the user is running, and load the page accordingly. In code it would look something like this:
if the user is running Windows XP
{
Set the web page text to "You are running XP";
{
else
{
Set the web page text to "Your are not running Windows XP";
}
how would I go about doing this? Any help is appreciated

To the best of my knowledge, no. The best you can do is determine that they are running "Win32", which is exposed in JavaScript as navigator.platform :
<!-- details omitted... -->
function window_onload() {
window.alert(navigator.platform)
}
<!-- details omitted... -->
<body onload="return window_onload()">

U can use Server object in ASp. It will provide u full information about what O.S. is running,Ur System Configuration and other system information. So try to find out the solution by using Server Object.

The previous, anonymous post would be correct, assuming you have the ability to write server-side code in something (PHP,ASP,ASP.NET,etc); however, given your example, I assumed that you don't have that capability, and are limited to JavaScript.
It might be feasible to do something with a Java Applet, but of course, that only works for users of your site with Java Runtime Environment installed.

I'm at the stage where I'm testing out my form. Everything works (error validation, sending data, sending auto reply) except sometimes it doesn't want to save the values of my radio buttons and textboxes. Should I be requesting those variables a different way? Please advise. Here's the form - http://www.csudh.edu/mcnair/application.asp
