MapPoint is the only Microsoft programatic GIS that I can think of and I don't see that this is all that much to discuss because it can't do that much that would be really useful.

I don' agree with you we can speak about GIS development , algorithms , map controls , path findint techniques and so on there are many things to speak about

try to search about GIS in the internet and see that there are many web sites discussing GIS problems

While I agree with you that GIS is a big subject that deserves discussion, I don't think it's a good fit with the existing CP forums, which are mostly oriented towards specific technologies.

It's also sufficiently specialist that most developers here don't know anything about it, so there isn't a critical mass of people who would benefit from such a forum here. And as you point out, there are websites discussing these issues - so surely they have an existing set of forums?

True it is a big subject and I've spent the large magority of my time (since 1994) developing and working with GIS systems. However, my point was that this site is very Microsoft oriented (take a look around the site) and that the only programatic GIS that Microsoft have is MapPoint. MapPoint is not very powerful by many GIS standards and, although it has been a couple of years since I've used it, I don't recall that you could provide your own algorithms, path finding techniques. Heck! You can't even define your own areas unless it is exactly an aggregate form of some existing areas within the system.

Dear Sir,
what do you think about create an open source map control which can be really powerful tool to start whit GIS open source solutions, do you feal that it is far or hard to do it, and this controls can be created by using .net framework and GDI+ which has many enhancements can help us with building that controls
this is my opinion, and I will try to create a similar control to prove that this solutions is not monopoled by big companies.

Personally, I think it is easy. But it really depends on designing a good framework to start with. (From personal experience I'd suggest paying close attention to map projections if your application is going to be multinational or be available to a geographically large country [any area larger than the UK])

However, back to the point of this thread of discussion: CodeProject will be able to help if you have any questions about the .NET Framework or GDI+ but I doubt there are enough people here with the GIS experience you desire for discussions about point-in-polygon algorithms and such like. However, at the end of the day it is not my descision whether to create forums here or not. All I am suggesting is that the forum suggestion is probably off topic for this site.

When I change my name, my name changes in articles, but it remaines as it was in my previous posts on forums, isn't it better to change my name all over?

The second problem is that when I change the name from A to B, I am not able to change it back to A, although nobody has it. Confused | :confused:

I am consistently getting a "error occured - timeout" when trying to load pages of most forums when pressing "Next". Sometimes I can get 2 sets of pages but usually "Next" is just not working for me?

Am I just an isolated case? Frown | :(

Hello guys,
Any one could suggest me how to obtain an IP address from a wireless network with out changing my network configuration?

Clearly, I would like to get an IP, subnet, gateway, and DNS information from a hot spot network without changing my network configuration (whether my configuration is static or dynamic).

Is there a protocol called Address Request Protocol (ARP) that lunched directly after the booting procees?.

I didn't find any area for Compact .NET. Can one be created? There are a few Compact .NET articles kicking around on CodeProject and it would be nice to see them all in one place. Also, it might encourage more to be written if there is a dedicated home for them. [And as I'll be using Compact .NET soon I might be encouraged to write new articles for such a section]

Have you ever thought about extending CP to include a project management section; something similar to sourceforge.net?

Something like http://www.freevcs.de could be used on the backend for source control (there's a SQL server implementation). You already have the forums architecture in place, so each project could be provided a message board for users to report bugs and request features. You have the ratings system in place for articles, so this could be applied to projects as well.

I think that CP has most of the functionality already built to make this a natural extension. The source control on the backend would probably be the biggest integration effort.

It's been tried already (CP² - CodeProject Code Projects) but all the projects moved elsewhere because CP just wasn't set up to handle that sort of thing.

Isn't this what GotDotNet (.NET projects) and Sourceforge are for.

I think adding it to CP probably is trying to do too much, and would require Chris to find more cash to pay for the extra bandwidth and servers, etc.

Of course, you could just apply the codeproject style sheet to one of the above sites Smile | :)

the benefit is, that we have less users, so the database gets smaller!

So someone takes a sabbatical or extended holiday something, and we kick their account off the site? Doesn't seem right to me.

In this day and age, I don't think database size is really an issue Smile | :)

Anyway, if the database is set up correctly, then deleting the user would require deleting the posts and articles they may have put here too (it's called referential integrity). So would you have the articles and posts deleted, just because someone hadn't accessed the site recently?
