For some developers. They would like to pack their resource files into a DLL.
This is to allow different language version to be shipped easily by just changing the DLL instead of recompile the entire source code after changing the const String in the code line by line.
Some developers would like to have their const string to be placed into INI files instead.
Just some alternatives of doing the work.

Using string table, you can switch user interface between deferent languages.

One word: translation. When you put all UI elements into resources, you can translate them without touching any of the C code. This is an incredibly meaningful fact since it reduces the amount of testing required on the translated version. If you touch any code, it has to be (or should be, at least) retested to make sure no typos happened while changing all the string literals.
It also lets a non-programmer translate the app. All they need is a resource editor.
If you never plan on translating, then... *shrug*

Not to mention, if you ever have a need to change what a string says, it's easier to use the resource than search the code for the string definition. Every once in a while, I've wanted to modify a title or reword a message in one of my programs.

As people have said, for "easy" Internationalization and Localization of your strings.
It also makes it easier if you decide to support UNICODE.
I never hard-code strings, but if you're just writing some POS app then, maybe you don't want to use a string table.

My company is getting our software ready to be compliant with the new release of Visual Studio .NET 2003. I was playing with .Net03 and had some trouble with the new interface. I can't seem to find two things:
First is the Components and Controls. Where you used to add something to a dialog box, lets say a textToSpeach control you would choose:
Project -> Add to Project -> Components and Controls...
Now I can't seem to find anything similar. I find some ActiveX controls, but textToSpeach and some other ones aren't there. Does anyone know where these went? 
Second is the Event Handlers. I can't seem to find an event list or anything similar to what was the ClassWizard (CTRL + W). Where can I get to this to add events that aren't the default added by holding CTRL and double clicking on an item? 
I'm pretty dissapointed with Microsoft's new interface. The first time I used Visual Studio 6 I had been using eMacs on a UNIX system and when I say VS I was blown away. It was so easy. Now I see .NET and it's crowded and ugly. Looks like MS wanted something that looked flashy and didn't think about usability. 
Well, enough blabbering.  Anyone got any ideas on where these things are in .NET? Thanks in advance for any help!!

Yes VS6 is like going to heaven compared to developing on UNIX. I had about two months of UNIX development a few years ago after having used VC for ages and it was certainly a culture shock!
I've not significantly used VC under VS.NET, having concentrated on C# and VB .NET. However, there seems to have been a lot of complaints from VC developers about the new IDE. To be honest, when I first learned soon after VS6 came out that they were moving to a common VB-like IDE for all the tools I expected that they would have a tough time accommodating VC.
However, for C# and VB developers I must say the IDE is excellent.

If I recall, you have to use the events tab in the Project Explorer area or something. Also I think there's a topic called "Where is ClassWizard?" in the online help for "What's new in VC?"
Anyway, I'm sure there are guys here who will be more helpful, as your questions come up quite often.

something wiered happened when the first time i clicked the control window, m_wndClient window didn't show up correctly,

run the simplest program , everything appears to be ok,
it just show "MyWindow"( because m_wndClient occupies all the space of the control)
but when i click in the control, it shows "MyControl" instead,
i have to resize the window or do other operations to trig the OnPaint event handler in MyWindow to let the control refresh itself. it just happens at the first time i click it, can anyone tell me why?
how can i avoid it?

What is the difference between .sln and .vcproj? What do they do?

Basically, a solution can contain multiple projects, and a vcproj is a single (C++, I think) project. A csproj is a C# project.
Whenever you create a new project, it will put it in a solution if one does not exist. In terms of the old versions of C++, sln == dsw and vcproj == dsp.
I, for one, do not think the problem was that the band was down. I think that the problem may have been that there was a Stonehenge monument on the stage that was in danger of being crushed by a dwarf.

I have a child window which ignores OnEraseBkgnd() and just draws it's content so it appears to belong to it's parent not be it's own object. Everything works fine, however because I don't FillSolidRect() with any particular color I need to fill the background with whatever it's parent background is. The solution I have chosen is to make a bitmapped copy of the control during OnSize() and blit this to screen during OnPaint().
How do I make a bitmap from an object, but that object doesn't actually draw anything i'm relying on the DC seeing exatly what I see. Is this true? or will I get a blank bitmap...?
Is what i'm asking even making sense 
Basically I wanna avoid doing ClientToScreen() and use the childs background as the bitmap.
I'm drinking triples, seeing double and acting single

Hi Deepak,
The following code will change the textcolor for the entire contents of the richedit to basically random stuff. I wrote it as the onTimer handler in a RichEditView. I'm not sure if this is what you meant but maybe it will help.
It is a pretty crazy code and it flickers alot when I tried it but maybe it will help.

I'm using Visual C++ 6.0 SP5
I create a new MFC Appwizard project, I choose SDI with doc/view architecture support, then I leave everything at the defaults until it asks me How do you want your toolbars to look? and I choose Internet Explorer Rebars then finish.
Next I enter the Project menu and choose Add to project then Components and Controls. This opens up the Components and Controls Gallery. In there I pick the Registered ActiveX Controls folder and find the Microsoft Multimedia Control (for me it is version 6.0) and insert it leaving all the options at their defaults.
In the resource editor under dialogs I edit the IDR_MAINFRAME dialog and add the multimedia control to it from my controls palette. I double click my newly created multimedia control and Classwizard pops up with a message saying IDR_MAINFRAME is a new resource... do you want to add a class for it? and I choose select an existing class and choose CMainFrame. Now I close Classwizard and go back to the resource editor and right click my multimedia control and choose events to add the OnPlayClick event handler. It prompts me for the name of the event handler and I just leave it as the default OnPlayClickMmcontrol1. Then in the code for the event handler I just put something simple to test out the button like AfxMessageBox("bleah");
Next I edit the end of the CMainFrame::OnCreate function like so in order to initialize the multimedia control (this assumes you have c:\windows\media\ding.wav available):

I run the program and the multimedia control works except the OnPlayClick event handler doesn't seem to get called.
If I do the same idea but with a dialog based program instead of SDI then it will work normally. I think for some reason the activeX control won't deliver events when it is on the dialogbar but I can't fathom why.

anyways, I tried adding a call to AfxOleInit() but all it did was make an assertion fail. When I looked into this I found out that it was checking to see if AfxOleInit() has been called twice. So even though the function call doesn't appear in any of MY code, the framework seems to have called the function for me behind the scenes.

so yeah I still can't figure out how to get the event handler to work.

The control will send the notification to it's parent window (the dialog bar).
You could put a trace for it in the dlg bar's PreTranslateMessage, just to check what's happening, or use SPY++ to spy on the dialog bar.

With your help I finally got this damn thing to work 
Since the CDialogBar class (the one that was created in the OnCreate method of the CMainFrame class) was getting my messages I replaced it with a class of my own derived from CDialogBar and added my message map and eventsink map and it works now.
Here's an even harder question: why in the hell did microsoft make me jump through that many hoops just to use a bloody activeX control in a toolbar? Isn't there an easier way?

I need to link the tables in order to run an update query on one database.
I am writing a tool that allows a user to set up mappings (fields in database1 map to fields in database2 based on certain conditions). The tool then creates an update query that joins tables from both databases and updates certain fields in database1. Since the tool may be run on different databases, I do not know in advance which tables will have to be linked.

Hi,
Does anyone know a good tutorial on keyboard accels, or does anyone want to give sime kind of lesson about it (like a checklist or something).
My problem is like this:
I have an app wich shows pictures, this works.
But every time a user presses the right-arrow button, the app needs to show a new picture (this is done by calling showNextPicture()).
I've already build showNextPicture(), but I can't build the link between the key and the function.
PS I'm using a dialog based app, with MFC support

Look at PreTranslateMessage() and TranslateMessage() in your docs. It will point you to where you can determine what key was pressed and from there what handler to call.
