It will NOT convert an entire program like this example. But you can use it to convert blocks of code so you can then use that for a reference to hand convert the rest if needed.

Hi All,
I am trying to get SMTP email address using MAPI functions in VB.
So far, I am not successful in getting that.
Here is what I am doing:
1. Use MAPILogon to get MAPI session handle,
2. Use BMAPIAddress to show address selection dialog box with session
handle got in step 1 above.
3. Select 3/4 addresses in that dialog box and click "To:" to copy the names
to "To:" edit control and click OK.
4. Use ResolveName to get properties of recipients selected in step 3.
5. I should have smtp email address in Address attribute of recipient.
I am getting address internal to Outlook, but not smtp(xxx@yyy.com) in step 5.
Can anyone please tell me, how I can get smtp address using above approach
if possible? If not, are there any other techniques to get SMTP address using
MAPI functions?

I have created a VB application which sole purpose is to create a simple text document. The application queries a SQL server 2000 database and returns a recordset containing 101 fields and typically less then 50 rows of data. I have run into a problem where randomly the application will hang while looping through the data. The problem has no correlation with regards to the number of records being returned. At this point my only thought is that there is a limitation with the ADO 2.7 component I am using. What I can’t explain is why this error does not occur every time. If you have had or heard of a problem similar to this I would greatly appreciate any assistance in resolving it.

Such algorithms are usually patented by their creators and won't be available as public source code. You might want to try the SourceForge but I doubt you'll find anything. The most I think you'll find is SDK's for various fingerprint scanning devices.
You might want to try www.neurotechnologija.com/verifinger.html. They have an SDK available but the site says "source code may be also made available for developers, who wish to gain all information about fingerprint recognition algorithm."

how to save a flash in a webpage as a jpg/gif/bmp file?
i used a flash object that i downloaded from the site of http://bukoo.sourceforge.net to create a flash movie file, and now i want to add a function and it can allow people to save this flash movie as a jpg/gif/bmp file.Can anyone here provide some codes or component to help me realize this function?

First, you can't save a movie as a JPG or BMP. Neither format support multiple frames of images. Animated GIF's can probably be used, but you'll have to write your own function to export each frame of the animation into an animated GIF file. As for how to do that, I have no idea.

We are using an ASPX file to create a webform. We are creating an interface to generate a table. This interface has a timescale with a drop down list of annually, quarterly, and monthly. It also has a time period listbox where one to many years can be selected from 1995 to 2003. There is also a choice of indicator that the figures are based on say for instance hospital admissions of respiratory disease. These indicators are drawn from a database. As well as this there is a listbox of geographical divisions for each type of organisation. These organisations are District Health boards, Regional Councils, and Territorial local Authorities. Only one type of organisation can be picked but out of each type one to many say regional councils can be selected. These lists are connected to a database . Then there is a button titled output the data which is to show the data such as what the indicator is, the years, the timescales, and regional organisations and the related figures. All figures to create the output are from a database. They are drawn from the an Microsoft Access database. Is there a way to do this through ASPX? If not what VB.net code would we have to write? We have a deadline coming soon. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Are you asking how to write that? If so, you're going to miss your deadline.
Or are you asking how to connect to an Access database from an ASPX page?
That's easy enough. Just search the Help in Visual Studio for "Creating Connections to Access Databases" and you'll find what you're looking for.

I am building a toolbar in VB.NET from scratch that mimics Microsoft’s toolbar that comes with VS.NET. I need to know the best way to handle popup menus on a drop down style button. I can show the popup menu below the button ok but what I really need to do is detect when the user clicks on the popup menu so I can reset the state of the button and redraw it. I thought about walking the popup menu's menu items hooking into the click event but writing a recursive method to do that seems kind of messy. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I defined a string:
dim str as string
and I assigned it a long string with more than 300 bytes:
str="kfa;sdlkjfakdjflakjsdfkd...
when the program runs, I found that str contains only 253 bytes and no more, as if the string is truncated. And I try to use str=str + "asldkk" to increase the length of this string graduately, but it still cannot be longer than 253 bytes. But MSDN tells me that strings can be much longer than that. So how could this happen?

I've got a problem when I want to printpreview my excel file. Here is the code:

The short answer is No.
The long answer is you have to write some kind of low level disk control software in C/C++ to do it in Windows. You'll essentially be writing a replacement device driver for your Floppy or CD Writer.
Besides, why would you want to? Copy protection is a waste of time. Just ask anyone who's ever cracked a game!

Is it possible to use operator overloading in visual basic. I just try to do it on vb6.0 using + operator(i.e to plus with numeric number and concatenate with string number). But this does not work properly. Any idea?

First, VB6 doesn't do true OOP and does not support operator overloading at all.
Second, the code you wrote is making an incorrect assumption about the VarType function. VarType will return the Type of the Variable, not its contents.

On top of that, both the '&' and '+' operators, when used with strings (.Text properties) will always append one string to another. In your code, you essentially did the same thing twice. Both 'ty=' statements will append one string to another.

using+learning C++ and java all the time. And I am now
exploring the VC++.Net, so I wonder what's the difference
between VC++.Net and VB.Net, since they are both windows
programming. Do I need to understand BASIC to use VB.net?

VB.Net supports almost all OOP specifications. The only thing it can't do is operator overloading.
In order to use VB.NET, you better have at least a minimal understanding of at least one flavor of the BASIC language. C++ and Java are closely related and more flexible than BASIC or VB.Net as far as OOP goes. But, you get that flexibility at the expense of complexity.
The difference between VC++.Net and VB.Net? Apples and Oranges...The two languages are just that, two completely different languages. Which one you use is NOT dictated by what you want to do, but more HOW you want to do it. For instance, if your code design requires operator overloading, you'll have to use either C++ or C#. BASIC/VB doesn't support it.
But that doesn't mean that VB is useless. Like I said, your DESIGN is what dictates which languages you can use. There are ways around operator overloading if your classes are designed properly. Your classes can be designed with Add, Subtract, or Whatever operator functions you choose, designing these as overloaded functions to handle different operand cases.

OK. That's a special purpose example. But for the great majority of apps, the design is the dictator. You project requirements are laid out and you come up with a modular design framework. Various parts of the framework are then designed and coded. The designs you come up with are going to be based on the techniques and languages you are familiar with. Sure, some languages are better suited for certain tasks than others.
You COULD write a simple business app in C++ but, your right, it is simpler in VB. Could you write a data fitting algorithm in either language? Sure! Again, it comes down to what your familiar with in languages and techniques.
Anyway, the person who posted the original question doesn't sound like he is going to be writing device drivers anytime soon. He still needs to learn the differences in languages, what their capabilities and limitations are and how to get around them when appropriate.
Just my humble opinion... But in the end, it's a combination of factors that determine the language(s) used for various parts of or for an entire project.

VB program is not as fast as C++ and our operating system like windows and linux are written in C and C++. When writing device driver or component. It is always better of using C++. For business application and RAD which program speed is not crucial. It is okay to use VB.

With .NET, the argument is no longer true since managed code is managed code - all .NET languages compile to IL and use the CLR - the only differences are any language-specific differences, which if the application is CLS compliant are not supposed to be used anyways.

My desire is to have ToolboxItems that are added to the UserControl at

- Using a ControlDesigner and invoking CreateComponent() adds the control to
the current design document (the UserControl).
- If one attempts to "re-parent" the control being "dropped" within the
designer for the UserControl by doing the following

re-parenting change? Making the .Parent and Controls[] change, and then
using the ComponentChangeService to make Changing/Changed notifications on
the "Parent" and "Controls" PropertyDescriptors ?
