Got a nice email from Uncle Msft offering me a "free" trial of ... TaDa... Windows 365. Wow, 30 days free on a cloud PC, how could you beat that?

I hear your pain. Wife and I are thundering into "retirement." Doesn't mean we'll stop working, hell, she has 3 business proposals she's spinning already. Yes, it's tough to live with her. You have been warned.
I got pissed off at apple because they kept charging me for apple TV although I had cancelled it. After working for 30 minutes trying to figure out who to talk to in Apple, I sad f'this. (Chris Maunder, the elephant needs an upgrade) - I cancelled my credit card registered with apple and contested 4 months of charges, the blood sucking vampire. Turns out, I cannot get to the apple app store without a registered cc. Okayyyyyyyyyy, created a virtual CC (God bless Citi, but other cards support this as well). The virtual cc has a $1/month limit.
If you are signing up for some perpetual service, please use a virtual card.

A while back I was taking a Pluralsight course and in one of the exercises the instructor said to go to a website that had an API for doing currency conversions. Said it was possible to setup a free account. Went to the website and it wants a credit card number. If the account is free why do I have to give you a credit card number. So, I didn’t do that exercise. After reading some of the other messages in this thread I see now what I should have done. I didn’t think about making a virtual CC at the time. Thing is just a few days prior one of my wife’s credit cards got hacked. Someone tried to buy some stuff from Walmart.com. So, yeah, I’m a little more cautious about giving out a CC to some place I know nothing about for a free account.

And this hear in is the very reason WHY I will not buy in to the subscription economy!!
I got caught out once by Amazon AWS (Well the startup I was part of at the time did...) and Amazon happily took $19,000 of the start-up's money (That later turned out to be something that was their fault) and we had a hell of a time getting it back.
I simply do not trust companies that want to have a "tap" connected to your funds before you can even trial anything, because it's all just insidious attempts to take money from you as and when they feel like it. It's quite basically, legalised robbery.

Um, no that's really very simple. YOU OWN THE RESOURCE. when my credit runs out, you turn that resource off until I give you some more money. pretty simple concept, web hosting companies have been doing it for years.
When my credit runs out on my linode server, it gets deactivated, the few things I do have turned on (Like my excessive bandwidth charge), they send me an invoice for if it goes over.... and take me to court if I don't pay it.
Why should cloud services be any different?
From a recent discussion I had with a plugin provider for SketchUp that I use:
ME: "Hi, I'd like to upgrade to the latest version please, I have V1 and I see that V2 is released"
THEM: "yea sure, what's your account login name?"
ME: "Account? I don't have one, I paid for this about 4 years ago, gave you my pay-pal, you took payment and sent me the plug-in electronically"
THEM: "oh I see... yea we don't do that any more, you have to have an account with us."
ME: "Why? SketchUp is not an online thing, well at least not the pro desktop version I use anyway, I'd like to just buy the upgrade and then go install it on my offline laptop"
THEM: "sorry, the machine you use it on has to be online!"
ME: "Why?"
THEM: "because that's how we do things now."
ME: "that's silly, the SketchUp pro app is still desktop based, works without being online, and I like it that way because I often have to take my laptop and go out in the field to use it."
THEM: "we wrote the new version so that it always checks if it's licensed when you start the app up, it won't work if your not online"
ME: "ok, I guess I understand that, what if I create an account, buy my plugin, register it then close my account."
THEM: "that won't work the plug in will stop working."
ME: "why?"
THEM: "because we now charge $100 per year to use the plugin, and you need to register with a credit card too."
ME: "but I only care about this new version, once I buy and install it, It'll probably be about 3 years before I want to upgrade because it does everything I need it too."
THEM: "oh it will work off line, you just need to sign on when you first register it, then it works offline"
ME: "ok, so it will work then if I create an account, buy the plugin, register it, then close my account."
THEM: "No, it will time out after 6 months. and if it's not online when you use it, it will only work in trial mode"
ME: "sighs - so you require me to be online, pay yearly up front, and even if I pay for a year you'll disable me after 6 months if I attempt to close my account."
THEM: "yes, and we'll also disable you after 6 months if we don't see the plug in sign in to our systems at least once per month for 3 months in a row."
ME: "and, if you do disable me before the year I paid for is up, will I get any kind of refund for the unused time?"
THEM: "No, that remaining would be our admin fee for managing the account closure."
ME: "and any versions I have that I have paid for will they continue to work after I have paid for them?"
THEM: "Yes, but only up to a year and only as long as you follow the monthly sign in requirements."
ME: "and if I sign up for all of this, will I get upgrades each year when I re-new the account?"
THEM: "yes, but only if you pay for 2 years in advance. Upgraded versions have to be paid for minimum 1 year before they are released, otherwise you'll remain on the version you paid for..."
ME: "So If I only remain on the version I paid for, never get any upgrades, cannot get any refunds for unused time, then A) what am I paying for every year? B) Why can't I just pay for it once, install it off line and be done with it?"
THEM: "A) Your paying for the new version of the plugin. B) Because that's not how we do things anymore."
ME: "Sorry, but no I give, up... I'll just keep using version 1 thanks, it does what I need and works how I need it too, good bye...."
It's like batting your head off a brick wall, they simply just want a re-occurring revenue stream, for as little or no work as possible.
Sadly I'm also seeing the mobile phone companies starting to head this way too. For years I've had a classic pay as you go account, I add credit I can use my phone, I don't add credit, I don't use my phone... it's pretty simple.
When I go to top up now, they immediately try to persuade me to buy "bundles" with the credit I have just applied to my account. "WOW!!! LOOK!! AMAZING... 5000 Texts for the £10 you just added to your account..." what's the caveat? Yea.... I have to use them in the next 30 days....", ummm no I'll pass thank you, as long as the account has activity on it within a 6 month window, the credit I have applied can be used for voice, data or text, and lasts indefinitely until I use it all.
I'll cap this all by saying, one company that I DO APLAUD, is JetBrains.
I have a one of thier top tier "everything" subscriptions. I routinely get updates and upgrades, at least 3 a year.
I get to test new products they bring to market, automatically, they just appear in my toolbox, I pay yearly, what I consider a very reasonable price for what I get.
But the best bit?
If I close my account, I freeze right at the version that I'm at.
Not only that, but I get what's called a "fall-back code" for EVERY product in my collection. That code, will install that product standalone on ANY computer compatible for it to run on.
My product will literally last forever. If I'm not interested in versions and bug fixes, then I have the last version I paid for and I can uninstall and re-install to my hearts content.
If at a later time I reactivate my account, I pick up where I left off, I get to upgrade to the latest version I have paid for at whatever price it is that year, if I keep my subscription going I get repeated discounts for being a loyal customer, so my cost actually goes down over time.
That in my mind is how a subscription should work.....
I pay for what I need, when I need it, not when the service decides they deserve it, and I get to keep and continue using the product I paid for (Where applicable of course) if I decide I no longer want to keep the account.
Yes I know their are some situations where this is not practical, such as for applications that run entirely in the browser, but this is really not an issue for me because I'm still an old fashioned believer in having software installed on my PC.
Heck, I still use MS-Office 2016 simply because I refuse to use office in a browser!!!

Here is the prompt that yielded that.
